Adding a LED Display to the Prototype

This week we worked on adding light to our prototype.


We are at a crossroads as to the motion element of our prototype: we have decided against a rail that follows passengers from the door to the driver, since there isn't enough space there. We are planning on having some motion in order to get people's attention, and we're therefore planning on testing out different light patterns in order to determine which type of motion would be best suited to our target.


Using the prototype developed last week, I experimented with different lights to add.


I first used a LED matrix, shown here:




We decided that the red color is too aggressive and does not send the message we want to send, which is why I moved to a pixel ring who's colors we can change to whatever we want:



I am currently working on creating an app which will allow us to change the light pattern on the LED ring while doing user testing, so that we can test several options and compare the outcomes. For example, we will be testing the difference between a solid light as opposed to moving lights. We will determine which types of light shows we want to do, and then get to work on testing on users.


We will be changing the light display using a Blynk app which connects to the prototype over bluetooth:
